First impressions

(12/04/02) I've just played the game for the first time and I have to say I'm impressed. The game is not by any means perfect (the music is just OK and the game play takes a bit to getting used to) and it wont be the top fighting game on the PS2 (Virtual Fighter 4 is a better fighter), but its a very good game; you can tell its a labor of love Dragonball Z fans will adore. The videos and screen shots you see on the web don't do this game justice; you have to see it in motion to really appreciate the graphics (they are not the best, but when you see the game in play, their pretty good). My only disappointment was that there was no Multilanguage option on the game (I understand that this was a technical issue: there was no room on the disk to fit 2 languages). I really wished to play the game in its native language (Japanese). But for what's its worth, the English voices were well done. It didn't stop me from enjoying the game. If your a Dragonball fan you must have this game (I can tell you its already better than DBGT final bout), and if your an Elite DBZ fan (who only likes the Japanese voice language) pick up the Japanese version which will be out in Feb 2003. Click here for a full review of the game.

The skinny so far:

  • You can play the story mode from the Saiyan Saga to Cell Games (what? no Buu saga?)
  • 23 Dragonball Z characters (Read below for more details) and 29 battleground locations.
  • 60 combos per character
  • An average of 30 different skills that each character can acquire in tournament mode
  • Unlock, customize, and trade skills with others to create powerful fighters (World Match Tournament mode: you'll be able to win rewards such as money and prizes that will allow you to buy specific capsules for characters. There are 3 different types of capsules skills for each character: Ability, Physical, and Support. With specific capsules you purchase from Mr. Popo you can customize or create your character's ability, physical and support skills anyway you like. From some of the videos below, you may be able to customize your character's gear as well. You'll also be able to trade rare capsule skills among other players using your PS2 memory card.)
  • 6 different play modes (one hidden). Read below for more details.
  • Use of original American voice-actors in story and play modes (doubtful on the Japanese voices)
  • No online play
  • Virtual Fighter and Tekken like play (basic controls: punch, kick, guard, KI blast and grapple)
  • Will appear on the Playstation 2 and the Game Cube (no Xbox version in the works)

Intresting gameplay notes:

  • Player will be able to transform into more powerful version of themselves (i.e. Goku transforming into a Super Saiya-jin)
  • No jumping or crouching, but characters can float (I hear you have to be knocked in the air to float, but its only a rumor)
  • Ginyu can use his "Body Change" ability!
  • You can earn (or find rather) actual Dragonballs in the games (but you can't trade them) and if you gather all 7 Dragonballs, you will be able to make a wish! I'm serious!
  • There is a capsule skill called sensu bean which will refill your energy meter when its low.
  • There is a capsule skill called viral heart which, when used, will make both player's energy meter slowly deplete. There is also a vaccine skill that, once the viral heart skill has been used, will stop the energy meter from depleting only for the player that uses it (which means the other player will still lose energy and must beat you before he dies!)
  • There is an ability called Fusion (this may be a technique for Piccolo, but it is unknown how it works)

Play Modes:

  • Story: follows the plot of Dragonball Z from the Saiyan to the Cell saga which are broken up into 7 chapters. Here you are allowed to play as either Goku, Vegita or Cell (depending what chapter your playing in) and act out some of the more popular battles that took place. There are also "non-fighting" mini games that you'll be able to participate in. You can unlock new characters and obtain capsules here that can be used in the Skill Edit mode.
  • Battle: Allows you to fight with 1, 2 players or with the CPU in any combination (IE P1 vs P2 or P1 vs CPU or CPU vs CPU).
  • Practice: customizable practice mode where you can set up the conditions on how you build your playing skills. Allot like Street Fighter Zero 2's practice mode where you can set up the opponent, what you want him or her to do, etc.
  • Tenkaichi Budokai (World Match Tournament): Tree based elimination battles (allot like the World Tournaments in Dragonball) that can use between 8 and 20 characters. There are 3 different difficulty settings here: novice, adept, and advanced. The game starts with the novice level, and when this tournament level has been beaten the other level open up (once you beat the novice mode, the adept mode will open up, then once you beat the adept mode the advance mode will open up). Completing all three levels will unlock the "Legend of Mista Saatan mode." Players can also unlock more characters and earn money to purchase capsules from Mr. Popo in the Skill Edit mode.
  • Skill Edit: using the capsules and money you earned from the Tournament and Story mode you can change the character's attributes in this mode (all changes you make to the character of your choice can be used in Battle and Tournament modes only). You can also swap money and capsules using two PS2 memory cards.
  • Legend of Mista Saatan (Hercule) * hidden mode*: This mode can be unlocked by beating all 3 levels in the Tournament mode. Plays like a humorous side story featuring Mista Saatan (Hercule) where you will fight Cell and other opponents (there are up to 10 challenges that you must complete). Here you can earn bonus points and unlock a hidden secret.
